We like the challenging nature of the work we perform every day. Though South Salt Lake is a small city many of the tasks we perform are as technical and complicated as larger governmental entities. Because we have a small staff each of us is trained in several areas. This enables us to diversify, and expand, our knowledge and skills. We particularly enjoy working with the elected officials and residents as we provide them information and assistance.

Department Mission/Purpose

 

The South Salt Lake Finance Department is committed to maintaining and reporting all financial information accurately. Internal controls, policies, and procedures are established, and adhered to, in order to safeguard city assets. The department will provide support and information to the city council, administration, and all other departments. We are committed to improving our skills while taking pride in our work in order to provide the highest quality of customer service to our residents.

 

Overview

 

All cash receipt and cash disbursement transactions are processed by the Finance Department. Some of these transactions include: utility payments, business license remittances, building permits. Payroll and accounts payable transactions comprise the bulk of financial expenditures. Thousands of transactions take place each year that are compiled into an annual financial report.

  • Evaluate and implement new technologies and processes that are appropriate for city purposes.

 

Important Things to know about the Finance Department

 

The city's fiscal (financial) year begins July 1st and extends to the next June 30th. Every year all financial transactions, and other useful information, are compiled into an annual report, which is audited by an independent certified public accounting firm. Annually the independent auditors present the results of their audit work to the city council. The audited financial statements are available to the public by visiting the city's website.

 

Department Accomplishments

 

Every year, for over the past 15 years, the city has received the "Certificate of Achievement For Excellence in Financial Reporting" from the Government Finance Officer's Association. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. Its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
